Book V of the Norothian Cycle (#1 The Sable City, #2 Death of a Kingdom, #3 The Wind from Miilark, #4 Devil Town)

One year after escaping the Sable City, Tilda Lanai and her friends are living within the Empire of the Code, but the darkness is never far behind them. The sorceress Nesha-tari is still locked in a civil war for the vacant throne of Ayzantium, and across the Channel the man now known as John the Red is ready to open a new war on behalf of the five dragons called the Gunnak.

John crosses the Channel at the head of an army, and the spark fired in the desolate hills of Ayzantium roars toward a conflagration intended to burn across all the lands of Noroth. The Gunnak mean to destroy whatever cannot be forced to bow - be it kingdoms, empires, or people quietly settling down after all they have been through.

This may not have been a good time to start a family.

To be honest, the beginning of the book seemed to drag just a bit, the stories were still thrown all over the place and I was worried that the story would lose it's way. Fortunately, as I continued to read, my worries were all brushed aside. The pace picks up and we see a return to the adventure of the earlier books in the series.

There are some unfortunate events, deaths, and other developments that I didn't want to see happen, but then there are twists, adventures, and a visit back to the Sable City which reminded me of how much I enjoyed the first book in the series.

I wouldn't have given this book 5 stars if it wasn't for the epilogue, that made me happy.

Good series
This is a good series to read and this book is no exception, but things are getting off track for the series. I like the characters and the setting is nice - enough new things coupled with accepted cliches. However, I just feel that this series is growing outside of its parameters and the story itself is getting off the track. So much is beginning to happen for what seems like the sake of perceived "depth" - like spaghetti against the wall. I am not sure it is going to hold together.

There is a bunch to like here and it is still a good read - but too much happening just for the sake of happening with a poor job of holding together.
There is enough turns and twists in these books that you will keep guessing and not a clue on what to expect.
I read all five of this Cycle book, I can't wait for #6.
These books are fascinating I found it hard to put them down.
Two great things about this series. #1 The Characters. Samurai, Celtic warrior, Roman legionnaire, wizard, and other cultural warrior types all fighting in the same world. The author makes them all plausible and likable. #2 Frequency. The author is very prolific, making sure that you don't have to wait too long for the next volume. And you will finish each book eagerly waiting the next release.
Obviously, start with the first in the series, but when you get this far, you'll have found out that it was totally worth it.
I once again give it the highest praise I can Buy this book! Buy this series!
This next section of this adventure did not fail to impress! I have enjoyed this story line from page one of book one and will miss my heroes as their lives are shelved after the next and possibly last step of their fantastic journey. Be sure and read John the Red to complete the journey.
